Holi….a festival of colors which celebrates the onset of Spring……In India all festivals are associated with food and so is Holi ! Besides all the savory and sweet food , what is traditionally consumed on Holi is this drink called, “Thandai”. Made out of whole milk, almonds, sugar and a specialty spice mix of pepper/cardomom/fennel, Thandai is sometimes also spiked with an intoxicant called “Bhaang”. At No-Mad, true to our philosophy of natural and healthy, we create our own version of the “Thandai” with a twist !
Ingredients (Serves 4 )
3 cups of chilled Almond milk
10 almonds, blanched/peeled and crushed
10 soft dates, deseeded and chopped
1 vanilla pod
1 tea spoon cinnamon powder
To blanch/peel almonds, heat some water in a small pan. Once almost boiling, add the almonds into it, turn off the heat and allow the almonds to sit for about 2 minutes. Drain and the peels should easily slide off the almonds when pressed.
In a blender, add the dates, crushed almonds and 1 cup of the chilled milk. Blend until the dates are well combined and smooth. Add the remaining milk and split the vanilla pod to disperse the seeds in the mixture. Blend until frothy. Taste and adjust consistency by adding milk to thin the shake. Sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon for that dash of spice. Serve cold!
